The photos in this folio represent a different and seldom-experienced aspect of the Salton Sea – an exploration by night of ruined and abandoned sites along the drowned shore of this shrunken remnant of an inland sea. The photos were captured over the course of several nights around the first quarter and full moons of January, 2008.
With these photos I hope to share some of the thrill I experience in exploring such modern-day ruins – an exploration conducted in a darkened landscape illuminated only by silvered moonlight and flashlight. By night, the ruins hold a stark and surreal beauty just waiting to be discovered.
Sadly, these fascinating modern day ruins are fast disappearing, having been bulldozed for redevelopment, destroyed through vandalism, or simply reclaimed by the elements and dissolved into the salty ooze of the shoreline. It has been my privilege to explore a few of the ruins that yet remain.
